Sophisticated scams that seek victims through identity fraud and instant messaging services

SiGMA is making a warning in the wake of a recent chatbot scam case in which cybercriminals set up financially motivated extortion schemes under the guise of profiles of SiGMA Group employees.

This chatbot scam is designed to manipulate a trusted brand or person, creating a fake chat group run by an automated bot or actor to build a false narrative around the intended victim. The funds repaid are more than irretrievable, especially when digital currencies are used. This fact is becoming more and more common as cryptocurrencies become mainstream.

This boom coincides closely with the growing use of instant messaging services. This clash not only increased the prevalence but also paved the way for an increase in criminal activity.

For example, Telegram currently boasts 500 million monthly active users and expects to have more than 1 billion consumers by 2022. It’s also popular with crypto seekers, targeting everyone from businesses to inexperienced investors, especially those seeking crypto through pump-and-dump scams and fake trading bots.

These scams, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated, are based on the fact that the stolen identities are often legitimate and credible public figures and brands. This ensures that fraudsters have a quick way to appear credible and legitimate.

Chatbot and website scams are often complex, but there are a few signs that everything isn’t exactly what you think. Beware of URLs that try to mimic the original site – spelling mistakes and added characters are easy to miss, low-resolution logos, grammar and unclear language are also important indicators that you may be using a fake site. Requests for remittances, whether payment or assistance, must be confirmed by the person in person or by phone with the recipient.
