MGM Resorts Announces Intention to Expand Online Gambling Platform Worldwide
Speaking at the Bank of America Securities 2021 Gaming & Lodge meeting, MGM’s Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Halkyard said that while the company will continue to expand its online gaming business, BetMGM, it will actively work towards an asset-light model that focuses primarily on the gaming business rather than owning.
This expansion is likely to continue in other regions, as MGM has no prospects for major new land-based resorts and is reluctant to invest outside of Macau and Japan. In addition to holding a majority stake in MGM China, which operates MGM Macau and MGM Cotai, MGM Resorts leads a group that aims to build an IR in Osaka, Japan.
“When we think about what this company should do, arguably the most well-known and most trusted brands in the gaming industry,” Halkyard said.
“Casual, high-end, and preferably in many distribution hubs with the highest availability in this country.
“Subsequently, within the scope of the regulations, the online services will be provided internationally.
“Realistically, the opportunities for integrated resorts are not in many jurisdictions and the cost of capital can be quite extreme, but in our region – Macau and Japan – we expect to be a player there, the best brands, the [most trusted] brands everywhere and the top of the gaming industry.”
Halkyard focused on the long-term potential of the company’s joint ventures with Entain PLC and BetMGM.
Online consumers around the world will become members of M life Rewards, and as a result of the support of the all-channel approach, they will earn points and rewards for playing at BetMGM. According to Halkyard, the company will continue to streamline its business strategy for the foreseeable future.
“MGM has used non-gaming brands in the past, and over the past six months, Bill [Hornbuckle, CEO] and I, as well as some of our executives, have unwound and shut down some of those investments,” he said.
“They’re all small, but they need financial and operational resources.”
“We’ve been through the dealings with CityCenter [sale], MGP (MGM Growth Properties LLC), so there’s less financial engineering and more simplicity and clarity about what we are.”
