The SiGMA South Asia Summit in Colombo, taking place from 30th November to 2nd December at the Lumina Ballroom – Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams, hosted an engaging fireside chat on 2nd December titled “The Winner’s Circle: Scaling After the Pitch.” This session offered a unique insight into the journey of a startup following its moment of recognition in the competitive SiGMA Startup Pitch Competition.

From pitch to growth

Moderated by Jenny Ortiz-Bolivar, Asia Lead Senior Journalist at SiGMA Group, the fireside chat featured Yash Gupta, Founder and Director of Credexon, last year’s competition winner. The conversation centred on the transformative impact of the pitch, exploring how one successful presentation can catalyse growth, innovation, and strategic opportunities.

Gupta reflected on the significance of the SiGMA Startup Pitch as more than a contest. He explained that the platform offers exposure to the general public and also access to guidance, funding and an extensive network of professionals at any stage in your career. “The pitch is what opens up the door to your business,” he explained. “But after stepping through that door, the real work begins.” Thus, he emphasised that once you pitch your idea or company, it is essential to prepare for ongoing follow-up and convert that initial lead into a profitable business opportunity.

Innovative strategies to scale up

During this presentation, there was a focus on how Credexon used various strategies to keep its momentum going after pitching. Gupta spoke about how they used a systematic process of listening to their customers in order to fine-tune their business model and how they leveraged cutting-edge technology to address the marketplace in an effective way. He expressed the need to balance innovation with operational discipline when developing a scaling strategy.

The audience was offered practical advice on resource management, prioritising development initiatives, and creating a culture capable of adapting quickly to growth challenges.

Ortiz-Bolivar guided the conversation to address the common hurdles faced by startups after initial success. Gupta was a guest speaker on the topic of managing expectations, creating strategic alliances and developing a fundraising strategy in a highly competitive environment. He provided early-stage entrepreneurs with an authentic lens on how to best manage this phase after pitching for investment.

Expanding networks and building opportunities

Additionally, the conversation around the overarching benefits of competing in industry-specific competitions, like SiGMA Start-Up Pitch, provided an opportunity to learn about networking and how it could provide immediate access to collaboration, knowledge sharing and future opportunities for business partnerships.

Gupta emphasised that fostering relationships within the industry was as meaningful as developing the product itself.

Attendees were encouraged to view the pitch not as a singular event but as the beginning of a strategic journey. The conversation offered a blueprint for emerging startups: to convert recognition into momentum, maintain focus on innovation, and harness networking opportunities to scale effectively.

Inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs

In the concluding parts of the fireside chat, attendees gained insight into how to achieve success by being persistent, adaptable, and taking advantage of opportunities when they become available. Gupta shared some insight into his own experience of transitioning from having won the SiGMA Startup Pitch to establishing the growth path of his organisation, Credexon. He inspired and provided practical suggestions for entrepreneurs developing in this southern Asian market. The fireside chat further demonstrates SiGMA’s commitment to assisting entrepreneurs who are creating and growing start-up ecosystems through the creation of platforms that will enable people with ideas to connect to investors and mentors, and gain international visibility. Entrepreneurs were reminded that while winning a pitch is a milestone, the journey of growth, innovation, and strategic scaling is ongoing.
