Leading US operator DraftKings has launched DK Replay – a new ‘pitch-by-pitch’ historical betting feature for MLB. The service has been approved by the local regulator, the Oregon Lottery, and is already available to players in Oregon. The company also plans to expand historical betting to baseball and other sports.

DK Replay is also one of the tools DraftKings is using to realise its Super App concept, under which a single app will serve as the primary gateway to all forms of entertainment, including sports betting, prediction markets, casino games, and lottery products. As part of this project, the company has announced plans to integrate the DK Horse app, which provides horse-racing analysis, into its main app. ESPN user accounts have also recently been integrated into it.

How historical betting works

The DK Replay service offers ‘pitch-by-pitch’ betting on hundreds of thousands of anonymised at-bats from recent Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons. Users predict the outcome of the next pitch – ball, strike or in play – in real time and place a bet within a set time limit. Once the bet is placed, the actual outcome of the pitch is revealed and the winnings are calculated.

Anonymised league players are assigned bronze, silver, or gold ratings based on key statistics from the original match: batting average, slugging percentage, ERA, K/9, and other metrics. This allows bettors to analyse the matchup and make decisions based on statistics. Once the sequence is complete, or if the user has not managed to place subsequent bets due to the timer, the full details of the original play are revealed: the pitcher’s name, the batter’s name and match information.

“DK Replay offers a new way to engage with fans, allowing them to experience the excitement in a unique historical format”, said Corey Gottlieb, Chief Product Officer at DraftKings. The company emphasises that the service allows users to engage with MLB content year-round. In addition, statistical metrics such as batting average, slugging percentage, ERA and strikeouts per nine innings will help players assess the situation.

Prospects for market expansion

At present, DK Replay is only available in Oregon, but DraftKings is exploring expansion into other states, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. For the sports betting market, this development signifies an expansion of betting options and a new format for engaging players.

The historical betting methodology, also known as hindsight betting, is based on extensive databases containing millions of sporting outcomes. For example, match results, statistics, and odds from the NFL, NBA, and EPL over the last 100 years.

In the UK and the EU, historical betting is classified as ‘novelty bets’. They are permitted on licensed platforms such as Betfair and Smarkets under the supervision of the UK Gambling Commission. With this model, platforms such as Betfair and PredictIt have been aggregating up to 10 million sporting events annually since the 2000s. Since the 2010s, AI/ML models have been reconstructing betting markets for past events, simulating real-time odds during matches.

Historical betting features allow bookmakers to constantly offer thousands of betting options. This is particularly relevant during periods without live broadcasts, such as the off-season, at night, or when activity is low. These features are already available in prediction markets and are gradually being incorporated into online bookmakers’ offerings.
