With the IPL season now concluded, it is possible to look back at how payment infrastructure performed during one of the busiest betting periods in India. Every year, the tournament generates massive spikes in user activity, making it one of the most demanding stress tests for payment providers and iGaming operators working with the Indian market.
Betatransfer‘s team monitored transaction behaviour, routing stability and conversion dynamics throughout the season, analysing how traffic surges affected payment performance across different periods of the tournament.
During peak evening hours, traffic from India grew by up to 3x compared to regular periods. The most significant spikes occurred on March 28 at the start of the tournament, followed by March 31 and April 2 during several high-engagement matches that drove unusually high betting activity. Traffic also increased during the final on May 31, although the surge was less pronounced than some of the peak periods observed earlier in the season.
The market does not break at once
The problem during IPL is not traffic itself. It is what happens when millions of users hit the same payment infrastructure within a few concentrated evening hours.
Under this kind of pressure, systems rarely fail completely. Instead, providers begin degrading gradually: settlement slows down, routing becomes less stable, payment flows take longer to complete, and conversion quietly starts leaking.
During this IPL cycle, Betatransfer saw conversion fluctuate between 24 per cent and 54 per cent depending on traffic pressure and market conditions. The lowest numbers appeared at the very start of the tournament, when overloaded providers and weak routing logic became visible almost immediately.
Why cascading alone is not enough anymore
A lot of payment companies say they use cascading. Under normal traffic conditions, that may be enough. But IPL changes the dynamics completely.
The main problem is that providers should not be treated as static infrastructure. Performance inside the same provider can fluctuate constantly depending on banking load, payment methods, liquidity distribution, user behavior patterns, and regional traffic spikes.
This is why modern routing cannot operate only at the provider level anymore.
Inside Betatransfer’s infrastructure, routing decisions are continuously adjusted based on live performance data across individual payment flows. The system monitors conversion rates, execution speed, routing stability, and behavioral changes in real time. If a specific flow starts degrading under load, traffic is automatically redistributed before the wider conversion rate is affected.
IPL changes user psychology
Another thing Betatransfer noticed this season is how much less patient users become during live matches.
Interestingly, the average ticket size barely changed. It still stays around $27. But user behavior changed a lot.
Under normal conditions, the full payment flow usually takes up to 30 seconds. During IPL peaks, this can increase to 40-60 seconds. On paper, this difference looks small.
In reality, during live betting traffic, even an additional 10-15 seconds can seriously impact conversion. Users simply abandon the payment faster and move on.
Device distribution
The overall structure remains mostly unchanged: around 90 per cent mobile traffic and around 10 per cent desktop. India continues to be a heavily mobile-first market.
But inside mobile traffic, the share of iPhone users increased sharply during IPL peaks. Normally, iPhone traffic for us stays somewhere between 1-5 per cent. During this season, in some peak periods, it reached up to 20 per cent.
This does not necessarily mean the market itself changed. More likely, IPL attracts a different layer of users during major matches and high-intensity betting windows.
And this is exactly where many operators quietly lose conversion.
A payment flow optimised only for “typical” Android-heavy traffic starts behaving differently once device composition changes under pressure. Small UX issues, slower rendering, poorly adapted payment forms, unstable behavior inside iOS browsers – all of this becomes much more noticeable during live traffic peaks, when users are less patient and more likely to abandon deposits instantly.
IPL simply exposes infrastructure inefficiencies faster than normal traffic conditions do.
For payment providers and operators working with India, tournaments like IPL are no longer just high-traffic events. They have become real infrastructure stress tests where routing flexibility, payment stability and user experience directly impact revenue retention.
