On 30 January 2026, Laurence Escalante, founder and owner of Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW), appeared in an Australian court on a number of charges unrelated to VGW’s business operations. The billionaire has been charged by Australian authorities in Perth, Western Australia, with domestic violence, assault, burglary and drug possession. VGW continues to operate on a daily basis.
Australian police have stated that a 24-year-old woman known to the defendant was assaulted in her Perth residence on Australia Day. According to investigators, Escalante (pictured) gained entry to the house, damaged property and stole some items, then proceeded to commit the assault. In total, he faced eight charges in court.
Details of the Escalante case
Perth police stated that some of the charges relate to incidents of allegedly severe domestic violence. Investigators claim these took place between June 2025 and January 2026. Investigators also conducted a search of Escalante’s residence, during which they discovered a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including cocaine and MDMA.
At this stage, the charges against Escalante remain allegations. He has not yet entered a plea, so the case continues to be heard in court. For its part, VGW has stated that as the case progresses, its day-to-day operations will continue under interim management.
Escalante’s ownership of VGW
Escalante is recognised as the founder of the VGW group, which was established in 2010. The company has developed global online casino platforms with virtual slots and poker. The platform boasts a daily audience of one million users, predominantly based in the United States. The Australian Financial Review estimates Escalante’s net worth at approximately $4.5 billion.
During the past year, Escalante has made persistent attempts to regain full ownership of the company he founded. He succeeded in this endeavour, as on 1 August 2025, the acquisition deal by the founder was approved by VGW shareholders. The shareholders approved the sale of the remaining 30% of the company, and the founder acquired complete control of the company. Prior to filing the document to implement the scheme to purchase the remaining ownership interest in June, he owned 70% of the company.
The intermediary company Ocean BidCo Limited granted Escalante full ownership after 85% of shareholders voted in favour of selling the minority stake. Mike Simons remains the independent non-executive director and chairman of the independent committee of the VGW board of directors.
Implications for brand reputation
Escalante’s return to leadership lasted only six months. In response to his charges, VGW confirmed that the founder had taken leave from his executive positions. The company stated that the allegations were personal in nature and did not relate to VGW’s operations.
The company’s statement to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reads: “We are aware of the serious allegations against Mr Escalante. They are unrelated to VGW and are of a personal nature.
“Mr Escalante has temporarily stepped down from his roles as CEO and Executive Chairman of VGW. During his absence, an experienced team of current executives has taken over his duties, and VGW continues to operate as usual. The company takes such allegations extremely seriously. As this is a private matter that is before the courts, we cannot comment further.”
The company’s position reflects concern that the arrest and charges against its founder could undermine the brand’s reputation, lead to an outflow of users and partners, and increase regulatory scrutiny and financial losses. To minimise the damage, VGW must act quickly and transparently.
