The launch of COMESA’s Digital Retail Payments Platform will revolutionise online gambling across Africa. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is a regional economic bloc of 21 member states focused on promoting trade, financial integration, and cross-border transactions.
The platform’s ability to manage cross-border payments in local currencies is a major milestone. COMESA launched the platform officially on October 9, 2025, and anticipates that the platform will bring tremendous value additions to the region’s online betting companies.
Kenya takes the lead in financial integration
Kenya has been a member state of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and a crucial player in the launch of the payment platform. Government representatives have emphasised the country’s support for regional financial and trade connectivity. Kenya Trade Minister Lee Kinyanjui has termed the platform a “game-changer”. In his words, “For the first time, cross-border trade within COMESA can be settled directly in local currencies. This reduces costs, shields businesses from currency volatility, and opens the door for MSMEs, women, and youth to participate more fully in regional trade.”
For online gambling operators, this development means faster deposits, instant withdrawals, and reduced transaction fees. It could make it easier for companies to attract and retain players across multiple countries.
Ruto champions regional economic collaboration
President William Ruto reinforced Kenya’s support for COMESA’s vision of integrated financial systems. He said, “One of the most viable pathways for Africa, and for regional economic blocs like COMESA, is to strengthen our home-grown multilateral financial institutions.”
For the online gambling industry, this message signals the potential for harmonised regulations across member states. It could also enhance transparency and provide safer digital environments for both operators and players.

Financial inclusion drives growth
Financial inclusion stands out as one of the significant advantages of the new platform. As more Africans gain access to digital financial services, a broader audience will participate in mobile betting, casino gaming, and lotteries.
Operators that adopt COMESA’s system are expected to experience rapid growth in user numbers and transaction volumes. The digital payment solution opens doors for operators to reach unbanked or underbanked populations, a demographic that continues to expand across Africa.
Impact on the digital betting ecosystem
Although the initiative mainly targets boosting regional trade, it will undeniably impact the online gambling sector. Like CS Kinyanjui stated, “This is more than a payment system. It’s a foundation for inclusive growth, a bridge for small traders, and a catalyst for regional prosperity.” The COMESA Digital Retail Payments Platform offers reduced transaction costs, smoother cross-border payments, and greater confidence in local currencies.
These improvements are crucial for the long-term growth of the continent’s digital betting ecosystem. By simplifying the flow of money across countries, the platform promotes a seamless and more reliable setting for consumers and operators.
A strategic edge for operators
As for businesses in the gambling industry, the message is clear. Early integration of this system could provide a competitive advantage in Africa’s fast-growing online gaming market. COMESA’s new payment infrastructure not only strengthens financial cooperation among member states but also lays the foundation for an inclusive, secure, and efficient online gambling landscape across the continent.
