South Africa’s largest digital, gaming, and technology event, the rAge Expo, brought thousands of enthusiasts together to explore the latest in gaming, virtual reality, robotics, digital art, esports, cosplay, and emerging technologies.
Held annually, the Really Awesome Gaming Expo (rAGE ) unites young people, families, developers, entrepreneurs, students, and tech fans in an environment that blends education with entertainment. The event offers a window into the fast-growing digital economy and the career opportunities it continues to create.
Creativity, innovation, and collaboration on display
The 2025 edition highlighted the expo’s ability to merge creativity, innovation, and collaboration. Representatives from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Advancement and Partnership Office attended to explore new trends and connect with organisations for future collaborations. Their presence underscored the importance of networks that support student development, research, and hands-on learning.
Mandla Magwaza, the Ambassador of the rAge Expo, plays an integral part in the promotion of digital creativity and youth empowerment. His perspective highlights the valuable role rAge plays for universities to improve their academic programmes and promote young innovators.
Magwaza explained that the expo is where academic concepts meet real-world practice.“In classrooms, students learn theory such as coding, design thinking, and entrepreneurship, but at rAge, they see these concepts in action through gaming studios, XR developers, esports teams, content creators, tech entrepreneurs, and digital artists who demonstrate the future of work in real time,” he said. He added that exposing students to such environments creates opportunities for practical learning, inspires innovative thinking, and helps them visualise possible career paths.
The importance of industry and education partnerships
On collaboration, Magwaza stressed the need for strong partnerships between industry and higher education, noting that technology evolves rapidly.
“Students must be connected to environments where innovation happens every day,” he said. He continued, “These partnerships help update curriculum, open pathways to internships and employment, offer access to advanced tools, and support research in fields such as artificial intelligence, gaming technology, and cybersecurity.”
Magwaza also emphasised that rAge is more than entertainment. “Events like this create spaces where young people can see themselves as creators, innovators, founders, and global competitors,” he said.
Learning, journalism, and career insights
From a student journalism perspective, attending rAge highlighted the importance of staying informed about industry direction, future skills, and opportunities for meaningful collaboration. The expo reinforced the understanding that innovation requires collective effort among universities, industry, and organisations committed to empowering the next generation.
Students, developers, and entrepreneurs experienced firsthand how creativity intersects with emerging technologies and digital platforms. Attendees could explore new tools, engage with professionals, and witness demonstrations of tomorrow’s innovations.
A platform for growth and imagination
The rAge Expo 2025 proved to be a powerful platform for imagination, collaboration, and growth. It strengthened conversations about how education and industry can work together to support young people in a rapidly evolving digital world.
Through bringing together different audiences, the event proved that digital creativity is not only a source of entertainment but also a link to gaining valuable careers and being competitive in the global arena. The expo has continued to inspire students and innovators in their endeavours to shape the future of careers and creativity in South Africa.
