The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has joined forces with the Liquor Regulator and the Community Policing Forum to strengthen responsible gambling awareness in South Africa’s North West Province. The partners recently held a community roadshow in Leeudoringstad Township, within the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, to educate residents about responsible gambling, liquor licensing and the need to report illegal gambling activities.
The event also highlighted support services available for people affected by gambling-related harm and encouraged communities to play a greater role in protecting vulnerable residents.
Roadshow focuses on education
The roadshow was a component of the Thuntsha Lerole initiative, a provincial program that uses direct interaction to bring public services and government agencies closer to communities. Officials described the obligations of consumers and licensed operators as well as South Africa’s gambling laws during the event.
Residents were taught responsible gambling techniques, such as the significance of staying within the law and identifying situations in which gaming could be detrimental. In order to help business owners and community members better grasp the legal procedure for obtaining and maintaining licenses, officials also gave information on provincial liquor licensing requirements.
