The new generation of AI models, capable of reasoning and interacting across multiple modalities – from natural language to images and robotics – will mark the pace of this revolution. These systems will be integrated into critical areas: from healthcare to finance, from urban transport to smart cities, and even defence. Neuromorphic chips and quantum applications will provide the necessary push to overcome current limits of computing power. The real challenge will be the ability to combine hardware and software development into an architecture capable of sustaining the exponential growth in demand for artificial intelligence.
An economy in transition
The weight of AI on the global economy will be formidable. According to projections in the report, by 2027, its contribution to global GDP will reach unprecedented levels, creating entirely new industries while transforming existing ones. Productivity is expected to rise through automation, yet this same automation raises pressing questions. Who will benefit from the replacement of human tasks with algorithms? While some professions will fade, others will emerge in fields such as personalised medicine, AI-enhanced education, and digital city governance. The boundary between opportunity and risk is thin, and the political and economic frameworks surrounding AI will determine its real impact.
Financial impact
The revolution of artificial intelligence will also strongly reverberate in finance. In the projected scenario for 2026, markets would have recorded a 30% surge, driven by the large-scale adoption of AI solutions by major tech firms, with OpenBrain and Nvidia leading the wave of growth. For investors, AI becomes a strategic driver: capital increasingly flows towards those able to integrate intelligent assistants and predictive systems into their business models.
Meanwhile, the fintech sector is redefining the rules of the game, harnessing algorithms capable of analysing vast data volumes, identifying hidden patterns, and forecasting market trends with greater accuracy. Yet, alongside this optimism come concerns of over-reliance on algorithms and potential instability triggered by systems operating too fast for human oversight. In this hypothetical scenario, the role of regulators becomes crucial: to set boundaries without stifling innovation will be the defining challenge, ensuring AI does not turn into the spark of new financial crises.
Ethics and responsibility
Every step forward casts a shadow. Algorithmic bias, manipulation of information, invasive surveillance, and concentration of power are among the key risks highlighted. The urgency for international guidelines and shared regulation is clear. Without meaningful human oversight, AI could shift from ally to threat. The challenge is not merely to build more powerful systems, but to build them fairly, transparently, and responsibly.
Three possible futures
The AI 2027 report frames the debate through three distinct scenarios, each illustrating the breadth of potential outcomes in the spread of artificial intelligence. In the optimistic future, AI becomes an ally of society, driving scientific discovery, accelerating the transition to smarter cities, and reducing inequality by opening new economic opportunities. The intermediate scenario is seen as the most realistic: benefits are evident, yet accompanied by social tensions, unstable job markets, and governments struggling to keep regulation aligned with the speed of technological progress. Finally, in the pessimistic future, AI becomes a tool of division, fuelling geopolitical crises, concentrating power in the hands of a few players, and polarising societies between those who control digital infrastructure and those excluded from it. These three possible futures are not certainties, but warnings: the path ahead is not predetermined, and will depend on political, economic, and cultural choices made today.
The geopolitical race
The race for technological leadership is already shaping global dynamics. The United States and China remain the frontrunners, while Europe is striving to catch up, and the Middle East is investing colossal resources to secure a place at the table. India, too, emerges as a determined contender. The geopolitics of AI extends far beyond economic rivalry: it touches national security, the management of data, and control over digital infrastructure. In this context, technology becomes a lever of power comparable to control over energy resources in the previous century.
Cultural and human impact
It is not only the economy that is changing. AI is redefining the very concepts of creativity and knowledge. From writing to art, from music to education, the machine has become a partner of human expression, capable of producing original content, solving complex problems, and even offering creative insights. This raises a crucial question: what does it mean to be human in a world where a machine can write, paint, and teach with greater precision and speed? The risk is not outright replacement, but the erosion of authenticity, that irreplaceable element unique to human experience.
Europe and Italy facing the challenge
For Europe – and for Italy in particular – the challenge is stark. Falling behind would mean becoming dependent on technologies developed elsewhere, with direct consequences on competitiveness and digital sovereignty. Universities, research centres, and start-ups represent a potential that must be nurtured through targeted investment and long-term policies. The challenge is cultural as much as industrial: to develop AI that reflects European values of fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.
