Talks to appoint Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo as the manager of the Italian national men’s team have fallen through, with reports indicating that a major hurdle in the discussions seems to have been regarding the 47-year-old’s ties to a Russian betting firm with which he had an agreement to serve as a global brand ambassador.
Pirlo’s links to a Russian betting firm
Pirlo’s connection to the Russian betting firm Fonbet was reportedly being evaluated as part of his candidacy talks, and members of the Italian Parliament as well as key figures within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) were involved in evaluating Pirlo’s role with the sportsbook.
Pirlo had signed a deal to function as a Fonbet ambassador in October 2025, and the deal notably came under heightened public scrutiny following a scheduled appearance organised by the bookmaker at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Pirlo’s visit, during which he was accompanied by fellow Italian football icon Marco Materazzi, prompted criticism, with concerns drawing attention to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Pirlo remarked that his presence at the event was non-political, as he commented that “the professional collaboration” in question had come about as part of his “working experience” in the United Arab Emirates “and is exclusively of a commercial and sporting nature”.
Pirlo is currently the manager of Dubai’s United FC, a team competing in the UAE Pro League. He took on the position following spells managing in the Italian and Turkish leagues, including a single-season term at Juventus, where he ultimately departed having won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italia, but marking the club’s first failure to win the Serie A league title in nine consecutive seasons.
He said that attributing any political significance to the collaboration would mean ascribing beliefs to himself which he had never expressed and which do not reflect who he is.
“I regret that a decision of a sporting nature was so quickly dragged into a public debate that ended up attributing to me meanings and intentions that are not my own,” he wrote.
Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament, remarked that Italian football was in desperate need of “a cultural, ethical, and managerial revolution,” but commented that the potential choice of appointing Pirlo would be one that “goes in the exact opposite direction”.
Russia’s ambassador to Italy, Aleksey Paramonov, commented that it was “saddening” to see Pirlo “being ostracized” despite his “extraordinary contribution to world sport and to Italy’s image around the world”.
Overarching implications for Italy and football
Pirlo’s appointment failing to come to fruition also ultimately resulted in Paolo Maldini, another Italian football legend and long-time club teammate of Pirlo’s with AC Milan, resigning from his role as Technical Director at the FIGC.
It has also been reported that the decision to approach Pirlo as a candidate for the position came about following failures to entice Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, two managers who are widely considered to be among the greatest of all time.
With that in mind, Maldini reportedly strongly pushed for Pirlo to take on the position, and felt that the refusal to go ahead with his decision indicated a lack of support from the federation. Maldini had only been confirmed in the position of Technical Director on 11 July and officially resigned on the 27th.
This situation came about following Italy’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, marking one of the worst periods in the country’s legendary footballing history, despite winning the European Championship in 2020, defeating England in the final that year.
Betting sponsorships have become very prominent in the footballing world, with many top teams across different national leagues featuring iGaming brands on their matchday kits, and many retired footballers going on to serve as betting brand ambassadors.
Ultimately, this situation may serve as an incentive for betting operators and prospective brand ambassadors to apply greater scrutiny when considering potential commercial partnerships in the sports betting and wider iGaming space.
Even in the case of leagues where restrictions are placed on such sponsorships, football clubs have attempted to find comparable alternatives, such as Lazio, playing in Italy’s own Serie A, agreeing to a deal with prediction market platform Polymarket, which resulted in its own share of controversy.
