The National Lottery of Burkina Faso (LONAB) has begun a mock audit process aimed at enhancing its internal processes. The process, which began in March, aims at enhancing both operational and managerial processes. This comes before a certification audit scheduled for April. The reason for conducting this exercise is for LONAB to be fully prepared before the actual audit takes place.

Mock audit for identifying gaps

The operator of the lottery has been able to clearly define the purpose of the exercise. “The mock audit, conducted from 16 to 20 March 2026, will enable the detection of potential non-conformities, refinement of internal practices, and implementation of the necessary adjustments before the official audit.”

Leadership oversees the process

The opening session took place on 16 March under senior leadership. Director General Ibrahim Zarani chaired the session. The audit is being conducted in collaboration with the Burkinabè Association for Quality Management.

This partnership brings additional expertise in quality management and compliance practices. Zarani emphasised the importance of preparation ahead of the official audit. “This exercise will allow us to identify non-conformities and make the adjustments so that we can approach the official audit with confidence.”

Comprehensive review across operations

The audit covers several key areas of LONAB’s operations. It includes document reviews, staff interviews, and on-site inspections. These activities are taking place at the organisation’s headquarters in Ouagadougou. Regional agencies are also part of the review process.

This broad approach ensures that both central and decentralised operations are assessed. It also helps align procedures across different parts of the organisation.

Strengthening the wider gambling sector

LONAB operates Burkina Faso’s national lottery and multiple betting products. Its portfolio includes horse-race betting through PMU’B. The audit, therefore, has implications beyond internal processes. It contributes to strengthening standards across the country’s gambling sector.

By addressing compliance gaps early, the operator aims to enhance efficiency and accountability. The upcoming certification audit will serve as a key benchmark for these improvements. As the April assessment approaches, LONAB is positioning itself for a smoother evaluation process.

Market growth adds urgency to reforms

Burkina Faso’s gambling sector has expanded steadily in recent years, reinforcing the importance of stronger oversight. The market was valued at over FCFA 64.6 billion ($104 million) in 2021 and continues growing.

Growth projections show the sector increased by 8.77% in 2025, with annual expansion expected to exceed 11% by 2029. This upward trend reflects rising confidence in regulated activities such as lotteries, sports betting, and casinos.

LONAB remains central to the ecosystem

As the leading operator in Burkina Faso, LONAB plays a dominant role in the national gambling landscape. Lottery products remain the largest contributor to state revenues among all gaming verticals. At the same time, sports betting continues to gain popularity, particularly around football competitions.

Mobile betting and digital payment services are also expanding access to wagering activities. With smartphone penetration estimated at around 45% in 2025, digital participation is expected to increase further. This evolving environment places greater pressure on operators to maintain strong compliance and operational standards.

A new frontier rises beneath the skyline of São Paulo. From 06–09 April 2026, BiS SiGMA South America transforms LatAm’s gaming capital into a hub of innovation, bold talks, and billion-dollar opportunity. Don’t sit this one out.
