BetMatch is preparing to launch South Africa’s first licensed betting exchange following its success at the SiGMA Africa 2026 Start-up Pitch competition.
Founder and CEO Nick French used the event to introduce the platform and discuss the challenges surrounding market entry. A betting exchange allows users to wager against other punters instead of traditional bookmakers. Customers can also set their own odds and bet against specific outcomes.
Building a first-mover business
French attributed the company’s competition success to timing, preparation, and long-term industry experience. “To be perfectly honest with you, I’m going to say it like it is. When you’re timing, product, work ethic, knowledge, expertise, 20 years of slog, sometimes the timing is just, you know it’s your time,” French said.
The founder said confidence in the product shaped his application to the competition. “And when I applied, they asked me, ‘Why should you be here?’ And I said, ‘Because I’ll win.’”
French insisted the statement reflected preparation rather than arrogance. “I was not being cocky or confident. It’s just the work’s been done. The market is ready for us, and the risk has been taken.”
Regulatory and operational pressures
Launching a betting exchange in South Africa presents significant regulatory and operational challenges. French described the process as highly complex due to multiple oversight requirements.
“There’s never been a licensed betting exchange in South Africa before,” French explained. He identified regulatory concerns involving the reserve bank, taxation, and international liquidity management.
“There’s a lot of complexity when it comes to the reserve bank, when it comes to tax, when it comes to international versus local liquidity.”
French also pointed to bookmaker pricing pressures and broader market resistance facing the business. “Doesn’t matter where you look. There’s a considerable challenge around every corner.”
Despite those pressures, the company remains focused on launch execution and compliance preparation. “It requires resilience, grit and a lot of sometimes stupidity to take it on,” French added.
Collaboration beyond fundraising
French described SiGMA Africa as more than an investment platform for emerging gaming businesses. “From an investment standpoint, it is a large-ticket raise. So we’ll go institutional. It’s a $10 million plus sort of pre-seed.”
However, he argued that the event’s greatest value lies in industry collaboration and partnerships. “SiGMA to me is not for investors. SiGMA to me is really just about the beautiful people that come here to collaborate.” The company now plans to strengthen relationships across Africa’s gaming ecosystem before launch.
Surviving the next phase
French said BetMatch’s immediate priority is surviving expected legal and competitive pressure following launch. “Firstly, I have to launch, and I have to survive the legal onslaught.”
The company remains confident in its compliance systems and legal preparation. “We’re confident that we’ve done our housekeeping and our legal, our compliance. It’s watertight.”
French added that the long-term objective is to become South Africa’s leading destination for exchange betting. “My key milestone is to become the known corner stop for the industry in South Africa to place a bet.”
Community investment remains central
Alongside commercial ambitions, BetMatch plans to expand its corporate social investment programmes through Grassroots Mzanzi. French stated the company allocates “more than four times anybody else of NGR going to CSI.”
The initiative focuses heavily on youth development projects in Mafikeng and the wider North West province. “In the province of the North West, we have a lot of work to do,” French said.
“One of my biggest milestones there is to get us to the youth of Mafikeng, specifically, and the surrounding areas. Get them involved, get them working, and get them hopeful.” BetMatch’s launch now represents both a commercial experiment and a regulatory milestone for South Africa’s gaming market.
