Live! Casino Virginia opened a temporary facility on 22 January and generated $4.7 million in revenue within its first 10 days. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2027 and will include a hotel and gaming complex valued at $1.4 billion. While the current operation is only a temporary set-up, the early figures suggest strong demand and highlight the potential for the resort to become a significant source of revenue for the state once fully developed.

Temporary opening that turned heads

Live! Casino Virginia opened its temporary facility on 22 January, generating $4.7 million in revenue within its first 10 days. Until the entire $1.4 billion resort is completed in 2027, the site is being used as a temporary operation. 32 gaming tables, 926 slot machines, a high-roller lounge, and progressive jackpots ranging from $50,000 to $75,000 are all part of the temporary arrangement. During its early stages, the casino has worked with 15 local businesses in addition to its gaming offerings in order to establish ties with the community.

Full-scale resort opening in 2027

Even before the permanent resort opens, Casino Virginia’s temporary building is expected to generate roughly $14 million a month, which adds up to annual totals. These figures are anticipated to rise with the completion of the $1.4 billion full-scale expansion in 2027, which will include more gaming options, accommodation, and entertainment venues.

The $1.4 billion expansion, scheduled for 2027, will include 1,600 slot machines, 65 table games, a 22-table poker room, and a sportsbook, broadening the range of gaming options. The resort will cover more than 450,000 square feet, with areas for gaming, dining, and hotel services. It will also feature 75,000 square feet for conventions, a 4,000-seat concert venue, and a 200-room hotel with suites, a pool, and a fitness center. Together, these features are designed to make the resort a multi-purpose destination that combines entertainment, hospitality, and business infrastructure under one roof.

Economic impact over next decade

Over the next decade, Live! Casino Virginia is projected to have a significant economic impact. Estimates suggest the project could generate about $2.8 billion in regional economic activity and $504 million in tax revenue, with $240 million directed to the City of Petersburg. In terms of employment, the development is expected to create around 7,500 jobs, including 6,100 during construction and 1,400 permanent positions once the resort opens. These figures highlight the scale of the project’s potential influence on both the local economy and public funding.

Senate advances Fairfax casino bill

Virginia lawmakers recently advanced Senate Bill 756 with a 23–14 vote. The bill requires that any casino in Fairfax be located within a quarter of a mile of an existing Metro Silver Line station. In addition, the project must be part of a mixed-use development covering at least 1.5 million square feet. This approach links the casino proposal directly to broader urban development goals, ensuring that any new facility is integrated into a larger community and economic framework.

If the legislation moves through the Assembly, it will require approval from Governor Abigail Spanberger. Gambling interest groups, including the Sports Betting Alliance, have contributed about $500,000 to her gubernatorial campaign, underscoring the close ties between politics and gambling policy. As the state considers expanding its gaming industry, transparency around these connections will play an important role in how the public views the process.

Online casino legislation in Virginia

The Virginia Senate General Laws and Technology Committee recently voted 9–6 in favour of SB 118, a bill focused on online casino legislation. If passed, the measure would allow each land-based casino operator in the state to launch up to three online casino platforms. This would expand Virginia’s gambling market beyond physical locations and offer digital access through mobile and online platforms, marking a milestone in the state’s strategy to regulate and expand its gaming industry.
