New York Senate unanimously passes betting statement bill

New York lawmakers passed a bill (A10329) that would require online sportsbooks to send you detailed monthly reports of all your betting activity. The Senate passed the bill 61-0 on the third reading and sent it back to the Assembly, which had already approved the bill with a 143-0 vote in March.

When you bet online in New York, you will receive a monthly statement that details your wagers, expenditures, and habits. It’s basic, but effective for keeping track. Passing this with unanimous support demonstrates that Republicans and Democrats agree on this issue. They view openness and responsible gambling as bipartisan issues. This has the potential to significantly protect bettors while also setting a new standard across the country.

Lawmakers say the legislation is designed to strengthen consumer protection and promote responsible gambling as online sports betting continues to expand across the state. If signed into law, the new requirement would add another layer of responsible gaming measures to New York’s regulated sports betting market.

Overview of bill A10329

New York’s online betting providers are now required to send you a monthly report, similar to a bank statement but for your wagers. It displays everything: how much you’ve deposited, how much you’ve wagered, your wins and losses, how long you’ve spent navigating through the app, and all of the promotions and bonus bets that the platforms offer.

You also get a lifetime summary that helps you understand your total spending, not just piecemeal info in emails. Instead of confusing transaction histories that are easy to overlook, you’ll receive a single clear, uncomplicated report that displays your wagers, wins, and losses in the same format as a true financial statement.

The overall purpose is to help you spot trends that you might otherwise miss, such as discovering that your losses are far more than you thought. When you see the figures in front of you, you can make better betting decisions. It is about giving you the reality check you need to keep control.

If enacted, New York’s monthly activity statement requirement will begin on 1 January 2027. Sportsbooks will then have 15 days after each month’s end to deliver reports to customers.

Legislative journey of A10329

New York’s bill A10329 passed the legislature quickly and with overwhelming support. In March, the Assembly voted 143-0, while the Senate followed at 61-0. Not a single dissenting voice arose, emphasising how it came across more as a transparency measure. Instead of limitations or taxes, it aimed to provide gamblers with clearer information.

Assembly Member Rebecca Kassay and Senator Joseph Addabbo were key figures in advancing New York’s sports betting transparency legislation.

New York’s transition to monthly betting statements underscores rising concern about the dangers of mobile sports betting, which has made gambling more accessible and difficult to monitor. Problem gambling remains a major public health issue, and it’s sometimes made worse because people only recall winning and forget about losses. Legislators hope to provide gamblers with a more accurate picture of their gambling habits by mandating clear monthly summaries of deposits, wagers, wins, losses, and time spent.

The strategy prioritises transparency above restriction, as seen in financial statements for banking or credit. With access to their gambling details, players can notice harmful patterns, switch behaviours, or get help if needed.

New York’s sports betting market

In April alone, mobile sportsbooks in New York produced more than $244 million. Because of its size, regulatory changes in the area frequently have an impact on national policy. The new monthly disclosure requirement may establish a precedent for other states. New Jersey is already exploring similar laws, while Massachusetts has enacted its own responsible gaming measures. These measures point to a larger national shift towards transparency, data disclosure, and consumer protection in sports betting.
