The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has revealed an initiative that will transform the digital economy in Africa. The UAE has confirmed its plans to fund $1 billion towards developing AI technology & AI-driven services in the continent. This initiative was revealed during the G20 leaders’ summit that was recently held in Johannesburg, where the UAE outlined a vision that links technology with national development goals.

The program carries significant implications for emerging digital sectors, including Africa’s growing iGaming industry, which depends on strong digital infrastructure and advanced data systems.

$1 billion for Africa’s digital transformation

UAE Minister of State Saeed Bin Mubarak Al Hajeri revealed the “AI for development initiative” during the G20 leaders’ summit. He said the program will bring AI technology to areas such as education, healthcare, and climate adaptation. According to him, “We consider AI not just as a future industry but a cornerstone of humanity’s future,” he said in a statement.

He added, “Therefore, my country is actively accelerating innovation to enhance productivity and drive significant advancements in the global economy, with a strong commitment to developing responsible and inclusive AI for the benefit of everyone.”

The UAE remains one of Africa’s most prominent investors. Its bilateral trade in 2024 reached approximately $107 billion, indicating a 28% increase from the prior year. Its total investments in Africa were over $118 billion between 2020 and 2024. These figures show the scale of its engagement in sectors linked to digital growth.

Expanding infrastructure to support emerging industries

Abu Dhabi is establishing one of the world’s largest data center platforms through U.S. technology. This move will help it achieve its aim of being a global tech partner. The region also has aspirations of developing digital infrastructure that will position the region favorably in the field of development in Africa.

Such plans carry a direct impact on Africa’s iGaming market, which relies on stable connectivity, high-capacity data centres, and advanced digital systems. Improved infrastructure can support better player protection tools, faster platforms, and more secure digital transactions.

The UAE is not a G20 member but attended the summit at the invitation of South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa. The meeting provided the country with a platform to highlight its long-term digital development strategy.

A strategic push to advance African growth

A second announcement detailed a similar $1 billion program. The initiative, called “AI for Development,” supports African economic, social, and infrastructural growth. ADEX and the UAE Foreign Aid Agency lead the plan.

The policy aims at building digital infrastructure and improving government services through productivity growth in various crucial sectors. H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made the announcement. He reiterated the UAE’s support for sustainable development opportunities through partnerships and specialised financial solutions.

The initiative highlights the UAE’s approach to building improved digital foundations in the African markets. The same foundations contribute to the rapid growth of digital gaming platforms in the region.

Integrating AI across essential sectors

A core component of the initiative involves applying technology across key sectors. Education, agriculture, and infrastructure sit at the centre of this agenda. The program aims to improve access, optimise resources, and support long-term economic growth.

These improvements also support sectors that depend on structured data processes. Africa’s iGaming industry benefits from stronger digital systems in sectors such as identity verification, fraud prevention, customer analytics, and content delivery.

Better infrastructure allows gaming regulators to implement stronger monitoring tools. It also helps operators improve compliance and safer gaming frameworks.

UAE leaders outline a forward-facing vision

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi of ADEX emphasised the wider developmental purpose. He said: “ADEX’s leadership of the AI for Development initiative reflects the UAE’s belief that artificial intelligence is a real force for advancing equitable growth and sustainable development. By combining technology, financing, and partnerships, we aim to support developing countries in overcoming developmental challenges and building long-term economic resilience.”

In addition to this, he added that UAE businesses will be able to carry out high-impact development initiatives. This comment from him reinforces the effort to develop economic and technological cooperation.

Strengthening support for communities across Africa

Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri said the initiative demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to global solidarity. He highlighted its focus on improving living standards in regions facing developmental challenges. The approach uses the UAE’s emerging status as a global AI hub.

The UAE has provided over AED152 billion in aid to African countries since 1971. This legacy continues through programs that place emphasis on innovation and inclusive development.

A boost for Africa’s digital future

The $1 billion initiative enhances the UAE’s role as a leader in digital transformation. The effort aims to deliver solutions that support long-term development across emerging economies.

For Africa’s iGaming industry, the initiative could create stronger operating environments. Better infrastructure can improve platform reliability, enhance cybersecurity, and support responsible gaming tools. These changes help markets grow with greater sustainability.

The initiative sets the stage for deeper cooperation between African regulators, investors, and technology partners. It reinforces a future where digital industries, including iGaming, can benefit from improved systems driven by large-scale development programs.
