Leading with trust in iGaming: A blueprint for affiliates

As the iGaming sector continues to mature, growth is increasingly shaped by more than technology and market expansion alone. Rising regulatory scrutiny, intensifying competition and higher expectations from operators and players are placing greater emphasis on leadership, trust and long-term collaboration. Affiliates are no longer judged solely on volume, but on the quality of traffic, transparency of operations and their ability to contribute to sustainable performance across the wider ecosystem.

Player retention has also become a central focus. Gamification, personalisation and community-led engagement are gaining importance as operators prioritise users who convert, remain active and build loyalty over time. At the same time, partnerships are evolving, with a clear shift away from short-term, transactional arrangements towards data-driven cooperation and shared strategic goals. Leadership styles are also being tested as teams navigate constant regulatory change, rapid technological development and increasingly complex global markets.

To understand what drives long-term success in today’s iGaming landscape, SiGMA News spoke with Marina Martini, CEO of Martini’s Affiliates and an iGaming expert. In the first article of this two-part series, the focus was on scaling through diversified markets, localisation and data-driven strategy. In this second part, she turns her attention to the people side of the industry, sharing insights on leadership under pressure, strategic partnerships, trust, player experience and how these factors contribute to long-term brand value across iGaming.

SiGMA News: Gamification 2.0 and personalisation are now central to user retention. How can affiliates leverage these tools to move beyond traffic generation and deliver real value to operators and players?

Marina Martini, CEO of Martini’s Affiliates: Gamification and personalisation have become key drivers of retention, and this is where affiliates can move far beyond simple traffic delivery.

The process begins with understanding the full player journey. When affiliates understand what motivates different player segments and how behaviour varies by market, funnels, content and offers can be tailored in a way that feels relevant rather than generic. This immediately improves traffic quality and increases lifetime value (LTV) for operators. By the time users register, they already feel engaged, which creates a clear advantage for retention.

Personalisation strengthens this approach further. When data is used to segment players and match them with appropriate offers, all parties benefit. Operators gain users who convert and remain active, players receive experiences that feel relevant rather than random, and affiliates demonstrate their ability to influence quality rather than volume. In today’s market, this is exactly what operators are seeking.

SiGMA News: You have built multiple businesses from scratch. How does leadership evolve when guiding teams through uncertainty and constant regulatory or technological change?

CEO Martini: Effective leadership is rooted in having a clear strategic vision while remaining flexible and able to adapt quickly. Teams need to understand that vision, including where the business is heading and why, so everyone stays aligned and understands their role, its importance and what is expected of them.

Building trust within teams is essential. Confidence in people’s professionalism and sense of responsibility allows every team member, team lead and manager to take ownership of their work and the decisions they make.

In iGaming, adaptability is critical. Without it, building a sustainable business is not possible. Overanalysing every decision can be counterproductive. Decisions need to be made quickly and in a structured manner.

It is also important to accept that not every decision will be perfect. Market conditions can change rapidly, requiring a shift in direction soon after a decision is made, and this is a normal part of operating in the industry.

Change is constant in iGaming, and the ability to guide teams confidently through it is what ultimately defines effective leadership.

SiGMA News: Partnerships are the backbone of the affiliate ecosystem. What differentiates a transactional partnership from a truly strategic one, and how does this approach vary across Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets?

CEO Martini: Transactional partnerships are typically short-term and purely commercial. One party focuses on immediate gains without fully understanding performance, profitability, or long-term alignment. Strategic partnerships, by contrast, are built around shared objectives and data-driven collaboration. Both sides operate transparently, exchange insights, analyse performance together and make joint decisions on budgets, markets and campaigns. This often includes integrated channels, exclusive promotions and aligned technology.

Sustainable success comes from transparency, alignment and a shared commitment to long-term growth. These factors clearly distinguish a transactional partnership from a truly strategic one.

SiGMA News: With so many promotion channels available, from influencers to search engine optimisation (SEO) and Telegram, which mix is most effective for building credibility and long-term player trust in iGaming?

CEO Martini: I won’t disclose any secret by saying that there is no “one most efficient channel.” What works today is a balanced, professional mix of channels, each playing its specific role in building credibility and long-term trust.

For any operator, the goal is simple: a quality product that players recognise, trust, feel safe using and return to. The most valuable traffic is traffic that communicates the product authentically.

SEO builds authority. It’s the long-term foundation that gives a product consistent visibility and creates organic trust over time.

Influencers add emotional connection and present the product in a human way, helping to build trust and a sense of safety through familiarity.

Telegram also plays an important role by enabling real-time communication, community building and loyalty. It is one of the few platforms where players openly share their experiences, and this transparency strengthens trust – if you build the right environment and manage it properly.

And finally, paid traffic amplifies all of these channels, helping to scale strategies that are already performing well. Every channel has its own purpose, and overlooking any of them can affect campaign performance and overall results.

SiGMA News: Finally, trust appears to be a recurring theme in your philosophy. How can affiliates build a reputation that lasts, particularly in a market where visibility and compliance are evolving rapidly?

CEO Martini: In iGaming, reputation is not built through a single campaign or one strong month of performance. It depends on the overall approach to business, cooperation with partners and the consistency of results. Affiliates need to operate as business leaders and reliable partners first, and only then as traffic specialists.

For me, it always starts with being transparent. Honest communication, accurate reporting and clear commercial terms allow trust to develop naturally. When partners see that there is no attempt to mislead, confidence grows over time.

Compliance is another part that’s easy to underestimate. The market changes fast, regulations change even faster, and the affiliates who survive are the ones who take compliance seriously and treat it as a core business requirement.

Player interaction also plays a critical role. When support or VIP teams engage with players in a genuine and responsive manner, it creates loyalty that cannot be bought.

Operational discipline completes the picture. Stable funnels, predictable performance, clean reporting, paying partners on time – these are basic things, but they say everything about who you are as a business.

If there’s chaos inside the company, sooner or later, everyone sees it. But when the foundation is strong, consistent, and honest, reputation becomes something that lasts – even as the market keeps changing.
