Evan Luthra: Why education, AI, and tokenisation will define the next wave of global innovation

At a fireside chat during SiGMA South Asia’s first day of conference at City of Dreams, Sri Lanka, tech entrepreneur and investor Evan Luthra outlined a compelling case for why education, AI adoption, and blockchain innovation will reshape the global economy – especially across the Global South. Throughout the discussion, Luthra emphasised that education remains the industry’s most critical catalyst. Whether dealing with emerging technologies like AI or crypto, he argued that fear and misinformation fade the moment people take the initiative to learn.

“Instead of spending the weekend watching a movie, spend three hours playing with AI,” he said. “If you understand how to use it well, you’ll outperform most of the world,” Luthra stressed that both AI and blockchain empower individuals to build businesses rapidly without relying on slow, traditional systems. But he cautioned that too many people in crypto still avoid educating themselves, relying on others for investment advice. “If you can’t explain how blockchain works, you shouldn’t be investing in it.”

A significant portion of Luthra’s outlook centred around the rise of real-world asset (RWA) tokenisation – from land and gold to business ownership. Bringing multi-trillion-dollar asset classes on-chain, he said, will dramatically expand the current crypto market. He foresees a not-so-distant future where personal identity, property records, and official documents exist entirely online, enabling fast, secure, borderless transactions.

Luthra highlighted that DeFi and tokenisation offer the greatest opportunity for the Global South, where millions have never had access to traditional banking. Regions across South Asia, Africa, and Latin America are already leapfrogging legacy systems and moving directly into mobile banking and decentralised finance. With over 400 million crypto wallets today – and billions still unbanked – Luthra believes this demographic will benefit the most.

The challenges holding back the next wave of innovation

When asked about threats to innovation, he pointed first to misinformed regulation. Governments that attempt to restrict crypto without understanding it, he said, only push activity underground. Poor user experience also slows adoption: “You can’t expect a 50-year-old to memorise a 12-word seed phrase.”

For operators and builders, Luthra advised prioritising fast execution and distribution over perfection. The companies that win will be “AI-first” and built for machine-driven interaction from day one.

Looking ahead, Luthra predicts that within the next year, the world will see a trillion-dollar company built by a single person leveraging AI. His closing advice was simple: start experimenting. “Whatever you do, go spend time with the tools. When you begin to understand their potential, everything changes.”
