Gozo is becoming an increasingly sought-after choice within the global gaming industry. Executives, innovators, and start-ups are coming to Gozo to investigate its opportunities as a business destination. Recent activities, coordinated by SiGMA in conjunction with the Ministry for Gozo, amassed over a hundred C-level executives representing various areas of the gaming ecosystem. The aim was to assess opportunities for business growth and innovation on the island.

Heathcliff Farrugia, COO & International of SiGMA World, highlighted the approach behind the initiative: “Together with the Ministry for Gozo, we agreed to bring a group of C-level executives from the gaming industry, covering various sectors, to assess goals and business potential.” Farrugia noted that attendees represented both well-established companies and emerging start-ups, reflecting Gozo’s capacity to accommodate a range of business needs. “Both need office space and access to the business innovation hub in Gozo,” he added, “and both see the value it can bring to their operations.”

The Gozo Innovation Hub advantage

The Gozo Innovation Hub itself has received strong praise from industry figures. Ivan Filletti, CEO of Gaming Malta, described it as “a beautiful space right in the middle of Gozo, ideal for start-ups and innovators, and a promising incubator environment.” Filletti positioned the island as part of Malta’s broader identity as a centre of gaming excellence, emphasising lifestyle benefits and connectivity that Gozo offers.

“Gozo inspires creativity,” he said. “Events like SiGMA expose the world to where the iGaming business actually happens. Leadership is critical, and SiGMA brings people and businesses together, facilitating innovation and technology development.”

Practical innovation and collaboration

Michael Chaouat, VP South EMEA at Zendesk, highlighted the importance of practical demonstration over discussion alone. “The Gozo government is investing seriously and practically, showing that everything is possible,” he said. Chaouat emphasised the government’s commitment to emerging technologies, including AI, and the value of bringing industry stakeholders together to explore real-world applications.

“It is crucial to have events where everyone meets in the same place to connect business-wise and understand what technology can bring to the table,” he added, underscoring the importance of collaboration in driving innovation.

Business growth and regulatory support

Sofoklis Michail, founder and chairman of Ausplus Auditors and Tax Consultants, praised the Gozo Innovation Hub as a model that combines growth with innovation. “The main advantage of Gozo is the quality of life and the regulatory support available,” Michail said. “It is only a matter of time before Gozo becomes a recognised hub for gaming, tech, and FinTech businesses.”

He further credited SiGMA with bridging operators, affiliates, innovators, and regulators, creating a powerful platform for collaboration and partnership development.

A hub for the future

Feedback from industry leaders emphasises that Gozo is more than a scenic destination. With strategic investment, a supportive regulatory environment, and a growing ecosystem of established companies and start-ups, the island is carving out a unique position within the global gaming sector.

SiGMA continues to play a pivotal role in connecting stakeholders and facilitating Gozo’s growth as a hub for gaming innovation. For businesses seeking engagement with a thriving community in an inspiring setting, Gozo is emerging as a destination of choice.
