UoM law student wins SiGMA writing competition with AI & Gaming article
SiGMA, in partnership with Filletti & Filletti Advocates and the University of Malta (UoM), is pleased to announce the results of a writing competition for students of law at the UoM, which was launched earlier this year.
SiGMA COO, Heathcliff Farrugia welcomed Dr. Stefano Filletti, Managing Partner at Filletti & Filletti Advocates and Head of Department of Criminal Law at University of Malta, Martina Galea, a law student at the University of Malta, and Megan Sammut, Junior Associate at Filletti & Filletti Advocates to its offices in Malta this week.
Martina Galea, who won with her submission titled “Beyond the Algorithm: Regulating AI Accountability in the Gaming Industry”. AI can enhance gaming but what happens and who is responsible when it acts illegally?, she asks.
Key themes include a look at the increasingly important role Artificial intelligence (AI) plays, particularly in betting systems and player data analysis, which enhance efficiency and improve user experiences. However, she cautions that AI’s autonomy raises risks of illegal actions, creating new legal and regulatory challenges. While legislators are working to establish frameworks that promote transparency in AI use, there is still insufficient focus on regulating liability and accountability when AI acts unlawfully. This article goes on to explore AI’s potential to operate illegally in gaming, the associated legal and regulatory difficulties, and ways to mitigate these risks, with particular reference to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, the General Data Protection Regulation, and the Malta Gaming Authority’s guidelines, focusing especially on the question of criminal liability.
