SiGMA was honoured to host Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of BOS – The Swedish Association for Gambling Companies, at its offices in Malta. Hoffstedt was warmly welcomed by Heathcliff Farrugia, SiGMA’s Chief Operating Officer, who is responsible for International and Government Relations. This served as an essential touchpoint in the broader dialogue between SiGMA and key European industry representatives, reaffirming the organisation’s ongoing focus on stakeholder engagement at the highest level.

This visit underscores SiGMA’s unwavering commitment to nurturing strong relationships with leading industry associations that represent tier-one operators. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, maintaining these connections enables SiGMA to understand better the perspectives shaping the market. During the office tour, Farrugia and Hoffstedt engaged in discussions on the increasing challenges the gaming industry across Europe is currently facing. These challenges include the impact of rising taxes and the potential risk of driving players towards the illegal market, issues that are becoming more pronounced as national regulatory frameworks continue to tighten. Their conversation brought further clarity to the scale of these pressures and the pace at which operators are required to adjust.

Showcasing SiGMA’s international reach and B2G initiatives

The dialogue highlighted the balancing act that operators must navigate between innovation and consumer protection. As operators contend with increasingly complex requirements across multiple jurisdictions, they face limitations in their ability to compete, innovate, and introduce new products. Hoffstedt and Farrugia explored how this tension affects day-to-day operational decision-making, from product development to compliance planning. They also spoke about how heightened regulatory demands can create barriers to experimentation for companies that would otherwise be driving technological enhancements across the sector.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for SiGMA to showcase its global presence and the international summits it organises throughout the year. During the visit, Hoffstedt was given more profound insight into how these summits bring together operators, politicians, regulators, and service providers under one platform, creating forums where constructive debate and cross-border dialogue can take place. Furthermore, the conversation emphasised the strategic role of SiGMA’s Business-to-Government (B2G) department, responsible for bridging the gap between the industry and regulatory institutions wherever SiGMA hosts its events. This reinforced SiGMA’s commitment to facilitating cooperation and supporting more transparent communication between public- and private-sector stakeholders.

SiGMA looks forward to continuing collaboration with BOS and welcoming Gustaf Hoffstedt to upcoming summits and initiatives, reinforcing a shared vision of a responsible, sustainable, and regulated European gaming sector. The visit marked another step in SiGMA’s broader objective of cultivating meaningful relationships that contribute to the sector’s long-term stability and growth.
