In iGaming, one of the most powerful strategies used by betting operators is VIP programmes. They are not just a perk for high spending players; they are systems designed to extend the customer life cycle, stimulate recurring behaviour, and create a sense of exclusivity. A closer look helps explain why these programmes work so well.
VIP programmes divide users into tiers, usually based on betting volume, frequency, or deposited value. The most common rewards include:
- Priority support access
- Differentiated bonuses and cashback
- Invitations to exclusive events
- A dedicated account manager
- Faster deposits and withdrawals
- Higher betting limits
In other words, VIP turns the players into a “special customer”, and psychology responds very well to that.
The psychological fuel of exclusivity
There is a strong emotional factor here: status. From a psychological point of view, social status activates mechanisms linked to dopamine and self-esteem. When a platform makes the player “level up”, it reinforces that sense of achievement. It is the same gamification principle used by running apps, credit cards, or frequent-flyer programmes, but in this case, the behaviour being encouraged involves direct monetary spending. Beyond status, other known triggers come into play:
- Scarcity: few have access
- Personalisation: everything feels tailored to the player
- Reciprocity: “the platform gives me something, I repay by staying and betting”
- Progression: goals to advance in the programme
This creates a cycle of stimuli that makes the bettor see value in staying active.
Even though this is a topic rarely disclosed by the operators themselves (for obvious reasons), there is industry research on player retention in iGaming. Studies by consultancies such as Yield Sec and iGaming Business indicate that VIP programmes can increase retention by up to 30% in digital operators (aggregated 2023 data). In some companies, only 5% of VIP players represent more than 50% of gross revenue, a pattern similar to the “whales” model in the mobile gaming market. Data from the UK Gambling Commission showed that, before the 2020 restrictions, 8% of bettors were VIP, but accounted for around 60% of total deposits.
There are three behaviours that VIP programmes efficiently reinforce:
- Frequency: Betting more times throughout the week can yield points, status, or cashback. This reduces pauses and improves WPU – Weekly Playing Users.
- Volume: The more a person wagers, the faster they move up levels.
- Permanence: Even if competitors offer better bonuses, many players do not abandon the VIP programme because they would lose their built-up history. This creates a lock-in effect, which is very common in SaaS and retail.
Regulatory scrutiny of VIP programmes
In recent years, particularly in Europe, VIP programmes have come under scrutiny from regulators due to risks associated with problem gambling. The United Kingdom, for example, tightened rules in 2020 with income verification to grant VIP status, bans on incentivising at-risk bettors and mandatory transparency in rewards. The result? Many operators reported decreases in VIP bettor deposit volume after the restrictions, showing how incentives influenced behaviour.
In less regulated markets, programmes remain more aggressive and with fewer restraints, which increases both the loyalty potential and the risks of dependency. And what about the player’s side of the story?
For many people, VIP is advantageous because it improves returns and the experience. But it is important to recognise that there is a fine line between commercial incentive and excessive stimulation. For this reason, mature markets have been advocating more balanced models with active monitoring of risk behaviour, intelligent personalised limits, scheduled breaks and more responsible communication. Operators that think long term have already incorporated these mechanisms, especially because a healthy customer yields more than a customer at the limit.
