Aristocrat Interactive expands Canadian lottery presence

Aristocrat Interactive, the regulated online Real Money Gaming (RMG) business of Aristocrat Leisure, has intensified its footprint in Canada by collaborating with Loto-Québec. It has also brought its online portfolio to the province of Quebec, highlighting the supplier’s ambition to establish a comprehensive presence across regulated lottery markets in Canada and North America.

Quebec’s online gambling market has grown rapidly, with Loto-Québec’s Espacejeux generating nearly CAD496 million ($353 million) in 2023, up from CAD270 million ($192 million) in 2020, an 84 per cent increase over three years. Since 2022, growth has stabilised at around 15 per cent annually, positioning Quebec as a critical market for Aristocrat Interactive, particularly when compared to Ontario’s much larger CAD2.53 billion ($1.8 billion) iGaming sector, according to Casino Fiable.

By contrast, neighbouring Ontario is home to dozens of private operators such as BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel, which compete for market share. Residents can legally gamble online at 18 years old, a year younger than Ontario’s threshold of 19.

Ontario remains Canada’s largest and most competitive iGaming market, while Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta are still dominated by government monopolies and offshore operators. Ontario captures 85 per cent of demand through licenced brands, whereas provinces like Quebec see offshore sites holding more than 80 per cent of market share, as reported by several media outlets.

Executive perspective

According to Chris Shaban, General Manager of Aristocrat Interactive, the agreement is a pivotal turning point: “As the exclusive operator in one of Canada’s largest provinces, Loto-Québec offers us a unique opportunity to deliver our premium content and aggregation capabilities to players across Quebec. We are pleased to support their digital roadmap with our extensive portfolio of proven titles and innovative experiences,” Shaban said.

Known for high-quality graphics, engaging mechanics, and innovative formats, Aristocrat Interactive’s premium content is predicted to increase the standard of online play. In addition, the collaboration ensures localised support, including French-language accessibility.

Fusion aggregation system

Quebec’s regulatory framework is defined by its strict state monopoly: only Loto-Québec is licenced to operate online gambling, while offshore “grey-market” sites remain accessible but unregulated. The province reaffirmed this stance in 2024, rejecting private licencing proposals, with reform unlikely before the October 2026 provincial election.

Additionally, implementing Aristocrat Interactive’s Fusion aggregation system with Loto-Québec now allows seamless addition of third-party content. Doing so aligns with provincial mandates for responsible gambling. Plays can also benefit from mandatory deposit limits, reality checks, and secure payment options.

For one, Interac is the payment of choice as it dominates with 72 per cent of deposits, reflecting strong integration with local banks. Visa and Mastercard account for 18 per cent, and cryptocurrencies are slowly growing at 6 per cent. This partnership reinforces safe, legal access to online gambling, distinguishing it from offshore alternatives.

Rollout timeline

Since June, the rollout has already begun. Aristocrat Interactive titles went live on Loto-Québec’s platform. For instance, content from NeoGames Studio is set to start later in 2026, further diversifying the range of online offerings. Moreover, the Fusion system will continue to evolve, supporting faster integration of third-party content and introducing new formats such as live dealer and instant-win games.

Leadership update

The partnership follows Aristocrat Interactive’s leadership move in July, when the company appointed former Light & Wonder executive Daniel O’Donoghue as Chief Operating Officer. Tasked with driving long-term strategy and unlocking new growth opportunities, O’Donoghue brings extensive experience in global operations, product development, and market expansion, positioning him as a key driver of Aristocrat’s future growth.
