Google will introduce updated gambling advertising rules on 14 September 2026, requiring all advertisers promoting gambling related products through Google Ads to meet expanded certification requirements and maintain what the company describes as good policy health.
Under the new regulation, advertisers with a history of policy infractions or poor compliance may be denied new gambling certifications or have their existing certifications revoked. The changes affect all gambling and gaming advertising categories.
According to Google, the new framework improves control over gambling related advertisements by taking into account their compliance history in addition to having the necessary licensing criteria. It will have an impact on gaming firms, affiliates, marketing agencies, and other companies that advertise gambling products through Google Ads.
Overview of Google’s updated rules
Google’s most recent updates go beyond normal adjustments. Because Google Ads is important in online advertising, the new regulations will have an impact on the entire gaming industry. The new requirement sets a higher standard for advertisers. Being licensed and presenting the relevant documentation is no longer sufficient. Advertisers must demonstrate compliance and responsibility. Certification will become an ongoing process, rather than a one-time approval process.
Moreover, the new change applies to certification standards that were originally specified in March. Every account working with gambling and gaming must establish compliance in order to be accepted. Advertisers must maintain “good policy health” by adhering to the platform’s policies and operating responsibly.
Domain limitations are considerably more stringent now. Only domains owned and completely managed by the advertiser are considered. There are no longer ways for advertisers to exploit loopholes, such as using unrelated or third party sites. This transitions from a reactive to a proactive strategy.
Expansion of certification requirements
When Google announced the new requirements in 2026, many people assumed that they just applied to particular sorts of gambling games. However, the amended standards make it clear that these terms apply to the whole gambling and gaming industry. This includes online casinos, betting, poker sites, lotteries, bingo, fantasy sports, and more.
Certification will be based not just on licensing, but also on operational integrity and responsible advertising. Google’s September 2026 upgrade focuses more on overall compliance history. Rather than focusing on individual transgressions, the new “good policy health” standard considers long term behaviour.
In addition, the upgrade will affect manager accounts, or MCCs, which are used by agencies and corporations to manage multiple advertising accounts at once. According to the new standards, MCCs with numerous revocations or continuous infractions will be unable to obtain new certificates and may even have their existing ones revoked.
With the new amendment, agencies that work with gambling related marketers are now held accountable and are responsible for compliance alongside their clients.
Stricter enforcement for gambling advertisers
The update also imposes harsher penalties for repeat offences. The enforcement process will no longer be limited to individual campaigns and may now include the qualification of advertisers for certification as a whole. Previously, several companies treated criticism as an annoyance and resubmitted their campaigns with little effect.
Under the new approach, persistent infractions could result in complete loss of access to Google’s advertising platform. Maintaining a clean compliance record may now be as important to gambling advertisers as acquiring new customers.
Organisations whose certificates have been revoked many times due to policy infractions will face severe penalties. Google has stated that companies who repeatedly breach gaming laws would be prevented from receiving new certifications and may even lose their existing ones.
For businesses that rely heavily on sponsored search listings, losing the certification might significantly impact client acquisition because search listings provide highly converted traffic.
New domain eligibility requirements
The Google gambling certification standards have been tightened, and the Google Gambling Certification Ownership and Control standards have been released, effective September 2026. Advertisers must demonstrate the relationship between the advertisers, the products, and the domain names.
Previously, certain advertisers were able to promote or generate leads across many websites. The implementation of the new system greatly reduces flexibility in this regard. Certification will demand confirmation of an advertiser’s relationship with the goods being advertised.
Google’s crackdown on prediction market
Along with its gambling advertising upgrade, Google earlier issued new guidelines for prediction market browser extensions. Beginning 1 August 2026, Chrome Web Store policies prohibit extensions that enable or promote real money prediction markets.
The new guidelines prohibit extensions that lead to real money gambling or prediction betting sites. Simulation products that do not involve money may be allowed if they clearly state that there is no money involved.
This is not merely Google’s anti gambling attitude. Many browser extensions have advanced capabilities for dealing with user behaviour, scripting, and page content. To combat misuse, Google has revised its privacy policy.
New marketing strategies
Operators are budgeting for changes as a result of changes in paid advertising regulations. Budgets are shifting away from paid Google ads and toward other platforms with less platform related risks. Some of the changes include investments in first party data channels, retention methods, and organic search. Compliance rules are tightening, and relying solely on paid advertising is insufficient.
Google’s concentration on domain ownership and MCC administration has also had an impact on affiliates and agencies. Gambling operators must understand one important concept that will benefit their operations greatly. They must be visible through efficient marketing and adherence to the platform guidelines.
